In her practice Evi Jansen explores the instability of meaning. By closely studying her surroundings through painting she not only describes a reality; she also discovers the obstacles related to this endeavour. Jansen zooms in closely on everyday objects and omits the context. Rather than discovering a core or essence through this, she instead brings out multiple possibilities, creating an almost abstract image that is not unambiguous. Her starting point is the question: how does an image acquire meaning?

Repetition is a recurring theme, both in individual canvases and in the series she creates, in which she explores a form over and over again. She often plays with contrasts such as movement and stillness, lightness and heaviness. By uniting these qualities in a single image, she emphasises that multiple possibilities can exist simultaneously. The titles give the work a further twist. What you thought you recognised might, thanks to a title such as ‘Drift ’or ‘Concussion’, turn out to be something quite different after all.
